The Red Brocket Deer (temazate rojo) of southern Mexico is among the most elusive and rewarding trophies of the Yucatán Peninsula jungles. Slightly larger and more vividly colored than its gray-brown cousin, the red brocket inhabits the same dense tropical forests of Campeche, thriving in swamps, palm groves, and second-growth jungle.

These deer are solitary, secretive, and almost entirely nocturnal — demanding patience and silence from hunters. Red brockets weigh around 30–40 lbs, with short dagger-like antlers and striking reddish coats that blend seamlessly into the dim jungle understory. Most encounters are fleeting, requiring quick, close-range shots and disciplined composure.

Hunting is primarily done by still-hunting along jungle trails or waiting from natural blinds near fruiting trees, feeding areas, or narrow water sources. Expert local trackers play a crucial role in identifying fresh sign — droppings, rubs, scrapes, and feeding marks — before setting up strategic positions for an ambush.

The best hunting period runs from late February through May, when food and water are more limited and deer move more predictably. Conditions are hot, humid, and demanding — true jungle hunting that tests endurance and awareness.
