Summary & Highlights

The Mexican Texanus Whitetail Deer of Northern Coahuila represent one of the most classic and sought-after whitetail hunts in all of Mexico. Sharing genetics with the famous Texas whitetail but thriving in the rugged desert and brush country of northern Coahuila, these deer consistently produce heavy, wide, and symmetrical racks with exceptional character. Mature bucks commonly score in the 140–160 inch B&C range, with true trophies breaking the 170-class every season.

Hunting them in the Chihuahuan Desert landscapes of Northern Coahuila is a true whitetail adventure. The terrain is a mosaic of rolling desert hills, mesquite thickets, cactus flats, and open valleys that allow for excellent glassing. While spotting deer is easy here, mature bucks are still highly wary and rely on cover and terrain to avoid pressure. Their movements revolve around food sources, natural browse, and water, creating predictable patterns that experienced hunters can capitalize on.

The rut in this region begins in mid-December and extends through January, with peak breeding activity in the first two weeks of January. This is when mature bucks lose much of their caution, roaming widely and becoming far more visible as they pursue does. Hunters targeting this prime window have the best opportunities at the biggest trophies of the year.

Hunting methods include glassing from ridges and high-racked trucks, spot-and-stalk, and strategic blind hunting over waterholes, feeders, and travel corridors. This flexibility allows hunters to adapt based on conditions and maximize chances at mature bucks.

Beyond the whitetail hunting, Northern Coahuila delivers the full ranch-country experience — vast private lands, warm northern Mexican hospitality, and reliable trophy quality that rivals many top destinations in Texas, yet with far fewer hunters and greater exclusivity.
