Hunting the brocket deer of southern Mexico is one of the most unique and challenging jungle hunts in the Americas. Two species inhabit these dense tropical forests — the Gray-brown Brocket (temazate café) and the larger Red Brocket (temazate rojo). Both are elusive, solitary deer that rely on thick cover and near-silent movement to avoid detection. Mature bucks are extremely rewarding trophies, with gray-browns averaging 40–50 lbs and reds 30–40 lbs, both carrying short, sharp antlers.

These are true spot-and-stalk jungle safaris requiring patience, discipline, and sharp instincts. Brocket deer are most active at dawn and dusk, moving through palm thickets and swamps. Hunting is primarily done on foot — slow still-hunting along trails, sitting in blinds over fruiting trees or water, or quietly waiting in elevated stands. Encounters are sudden and fleeting, often at close range, demanding quick reflexes and precise shooting.

Our hunts take place across prime brocket country in southern Campeche, within vast private and communal lands. Local trackers are essential, reading subtle signs like feeding marks, droppings, rubs, and scrapes to identify likely areas for stands or blinds.

The best hunting period runs from late winter to spring when food and water sources are limited and deer movement is most consistent. Conditions are hot and humid, with occasional tropical rain — part of what makes these hunts both demanding and unforgettable.

The same jungles also host Ocellated Turkey, Great Curassow, and Crested Guan, allowing hunters to combine brocket pursuits with other exotic jungle game for a complete tropical hunting experience.
